Western Regionals celebrates 25 years!
It is fitting the 25th year of the Western Regionals were celebrated in Alberta. It was back in 1989 when the first ever Westerns were held in in the City of Edmonton. Because of the dedication to the sport back in 1988 from Western leaders like Al Goodrich and Al Deagle from B.C. and Alberta's Ron Doornbos, Brian Malacko and Steve Posavec the creation of the Western Regionals was born. That first year was a huge success with six teams from the provinces of

BC and Alberta competing and they continued to compete against each other until 1995 when Manitoba entered for the first time. It was 10 years later when, in 2005, Saskatchewan joined the tournament filling out the provinces that make up the Western Region. Since that inaugural Championship, the tournament has grown from Men's Division B to include Men's Division C (2000), Women's B (2012) and new this year Men's Division D. Over the last 24 years, British Columbia has hosted 10 tournaments, Alberta 9, Manitoba 4 and Saskatchewan 1. The largest Westerns ever held to date was in 2000 with the introduction of the first ever Men's C which had 14 teams registered in that division alone. The future is bright for the Western Regionals. Now that we have 3 levels of play for Men and the Women teams are all competing, this event will continue to grow not only in size, but in popularity, as well.

What were Regionals and how did a team qualify in Alberta?

Regionals were promoted by the CBHA for Men's Divisions B, C and D, as well as, Women's B

Each year provinces entered teams to compete for regional gold.

Western Regionals - BC, AB, SK, MN

Eastern Regionals - ON, QB, NS, NB, NL, PEI

In Alberta, to qualify a team must compete in the previous season Alberta Provincial Championships and earn the right to represent by winning a gold medal. Alberta can also send a second team offering it to the silver medal team.

Effective 2016 the CBHA combined both regions offering a National Championship for both Men and Women.
